Mila and Gran fold a red paper boat and send it out across a garden puddle. With Pip watching from the shore, a dripping leaf gives Mila something else to add to their sea.

The Very Little Voyage
Mila’s red boat is ready for the puddle.
Gran folded the red paper. Mila pressed it flat. Fold, press. Fold, press. Now they had a boat. “What shall we call her?” asked Gran. “Tomato,” said Mila. Pip sniffed the boat. “She’s not for eating,” Mila told him.
Mila put Tomato in the puddle beside her boot. “Off you go!” The boat bobbed on the water. “Out to sea,” said Gran. Pip watched from the path. Mila spotted a wet green leaf beside him.
Mila picked up the leaf. Water dripped from its tip. She held it over Tomato. Drip. Plip! A ring spread across the puddle. “It’s raining at sea!” said Mila. She held her leaf-cloud steady.
Gran looked up at the sky. “Shall I fetch my umbrella?” “No,” said Mila. “It’s only raining on Tomato.” One more drop fell from the leaf. Plip! Tomato bobbed beneath it.
